West Hampton Baptist Church offers sign classes based upon demand.
These classes are geared towards the needs of the persons signing up for the classes.
The classes are usually offered on Wednesday evenings at no cost.
The classes generally continue for 8 to 10 weeks.
Three levels are offered: beginning, intermediate and advanced.
The first two levels may be taught by either a deaf or hearing individual. If taught by a deaf person, there is a hearing
person available to assist with vocal communication while the basics are learned.
- Beginning class teaches fingerspelling and basic vocabulary.
- Intermediate class builds on the beginning class by increasing the vocabulary and teaching basic ASL and deaf idioms.
- Advanced level has a deaf person as the instructor. This person would teach ASL and deaf culture.
